What is a Digital Camera?

Nikon Digital Camera

A digital camera captures images electronically and stores them in digital form until they are downloaded onto a computer, for example, for viewing or printing. They are far more versatile than standard cameras and allow the user to pick and choose which images to keep and which to delete before printing.

Digital cameras take their power from batteries which are rechargeable and may include many of the features found on more conventional cameras, including focus, zoom, manual exposure, various flash modes, red-eye reduction and self-timer. It is usually possible to compose and review shots using a built-in liquid crystal display (LCD) screen.

Instead of retaining the image on photographic film, a digital camera saves each selected image as a digital file in an internal memory. The size of this memory will alter depending on the quality of the product in question. The quality of the image is largely dependent on the number of pixels in it. Depending on the camera, the user will have more or less control over the quality of each photograph.
